“The Help” grossed $25.5 million over the weekend, and $35.4 million since its opening last Wednesday. Despite the great numbers, the movie could not edge past “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” to get the number one spot.

The Dreamworks/Disney film stars Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer and it follows their bond in 1960’s Mississippi. A southern girl, determined to be a writer, returns from college only to turn her southern Mississippi town on its head. She decides to interview black women who take care of white families to write a book from the perspective of “the help”.

Time reports 74% of attendees were women and 60% were over 35. The Oscar buzzing film was adapted from Kathryn Stockett’s novel and was directed by Tate Taylor.
