While some speculate that Whitney Houston’s death was not a result of natural causes, her cousin Dionne Warwick thinks the singer suffered a heart attack.
“In all honestly, I think she had a heart attack. That’s what I think happened to her. I think she had a heart attack,” Dionne told “Entertainment Tonight.”
It’s still unclear exactly how Whitney died or whether drugs played a part, but Dionne said Whitney was taking “giant steps” toward recovery.
“She knew what she was doing and had reckoned with it,” Dionne said when asked about Whitney’s drug use.
Dionne said she spoke to Whitney on the day she died. Her younger cousin had persuaded her to fly to L.A. for the Grammy Awards festivities.
“I spoke with Whitney earlier that day because I’d spoken to her while I was here in Jersey. I hadn’t made a decision as to whether I was going to go to the party or not… I decided to come on in, and I spoke to her that morning, and I said, ‘Well, I’m here,’” Dionne recalled. “She sounded so up and ready.”
A little more than a month after Whitney was found dead in the bathtub of her hotel room, Dionne admits she’s “still struggling” with the events of that day.
While many found out about the tragedy from news reports, Dionne said she got a call from her son, and she was instructed “in no uncertain terms” to come to the hotel.
“When I got there, it was not a pleasant arrival. It’s just not to be believed and still is not to be believed,” said Dionne, who also addressed the rumors that have been constantly swirling since Whitney’s death.
“People love to talk about things they don’t know, and what they don’t know, they make up,” she said.
Dionne said that working on her latest album has distracted her from focusing on Whitney’s death, but she still thinks about her cousin, whose spirit she said will remain with her loved ones.
“I want to have the peace that I know she’s enjoying right now,” she said.
