Jada Pinkett Smith is back in Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted as the voice of Gloria the Hippo, a character she knows well.

“This is our third installment so it’s like putting on an old jacket, shirt or a pair of old slippers that you are just very familiar with. So it’s not difficult at all,” she told S2S.

Jada fell in love with her character, Gloria, because she doesn’t apologize for how she looks and emits a confidence that little girls can be empowered by.
“She’s a lot of girl and she loves it!” Jada said. “I try to give her that sass and that swag. It’s not necessarily talking about it, but sometimes just showing it. It’s about how you look at yourself and how you carry yourself.”
The film also stars the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Sacha Baron Cohen and Cedric the Entertainer. Jada said that her favorite moments this time around involve the unexpected love story of Sophie the Bear and Sacha’s lemur king, King Julian. “That’s probably the most adorable aspect of the storyline to me. I love it. I don’t get enough of it. That bear is hilarious!” Jada said.
Jada’s family hadn’t seen the film when we talked to her (they were waiting for the premiere), but with Will’s summer blockbuster Men in Black 3 in theaters, too, Jada feels like her family definitely supports each other’s projects. “That’s just part of being in a creative group like we are,” she said.
She also told S2S that she doesn’t try to separate her career and motherhood. “I never stopped being a mother and I never stopped being an artist, which is probably why my kids are so creative. I don’t wear two different hats.”

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted hits theaters on June 8. Check out the theatrical trailer below.
