As the Democratic National Convention was taking place in Charlotte on Wednesday, the 2012 NFL season kicked off in New York with a pre-show featuring performances from Mariah Carey and No Doubt, and the National Anthem belted by Queen Latifah.

The NFL moved its traditional Thursday start to Wednesday to avoid conflicting with tonight’s scheduled DNC speech by President Barack Obama. It was the first time in 64 years a regular-season NFL game has been played on a Wednesday.

Carey worked her performance in a glittery gold dress, flanked by Cee Lo Green, for “Triumphant (Get ‘Em),” while No Doubt followed with their latest single “Settle Down.”

Before the game, Latifah took to the field for the National Anthem, singing a gospel-style rendition backed by the Jubilation Choir.
