After pleading guilty to tax evasion in 2012, Grammy-Award winning singer and actress Lauryn Hill has been sentenced by a New Jersey judge to three months in prison.

Hill owed taxes on $1 Million worth of income and was able to pay $970,000 prior to sentencing, but it was not enough to keep her out of jail completely. The singer and rapper recently signed a deal with Sony records and released a song “Neurotic Society” on iTunes in an effort to raise funds towards her debt.

“I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that,” Hill said in a statement to the judge on Monday.

Hill had faced a maximum sentence of one year each on three counts. Her attorney had sought probation. It is not known where she will report to serve her sentence.
