Singer D’Angelo has cancelled a total of number of five dates since last weekend “due to a medical emergency.”

He has now missed shows in Chicago, Minneapolis, San Diego, New York and Maryland.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the promoter Live Nation stated the cancellations were due to an unspecified medical emergency.

An agent for D’Angelo confirmed that a health issue was involved. “It’s serious, but he’ll be OK,” a House of Blues executive said he was told. The singer was reportedly in the hospital when he cancelled his show in Columbia, Maryland last weekend.

D’Angelo has been a more active presence on tour lately after a reclusive period during which he rarely performed live.

Earlier this year the singer was reportedly close to completing his first new album since 2000′s “Voodoo.
