This week, the oldest state university in California crowed it’s first African-American couple as homecoming king and queen.
According to reports, San Jose State University announced Daniel Harris-Lucas and Diana Busaka as winners of the honor on Thursday night.
“It’s a great accomplishment,” 23-year-old Harris-Lucas told NBC Bay Area. “But it’s probably overdue. I’m glad to be part of history. But this probably should have happened years ago.”
“I think this is awesome,” 22-year-old Busaka added. “It’s just crazy.”
The new homecoming king and queen were chosen among 24 other applicants who submitted resumes, personal statements and letters of recommendation.
Harris-Lucas and Busaka were added to the SJSU campus lore alongside famous former students Tommie Smith and John Carlos. “The pair each raised a black-gloved fist during the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City during the American national anthem.” NBC reports. “Smith took first place in the 200 meter race with a world-record time of 19.83 seconds. Carlos took third place with 20.10 seconds. Their ‘human rights salute’ is regarded as the most overt political statements in the history of the Olympic Games.”
