Millions tune in to hear her charismatic up close and personal style. More than a radio personality, listeners of the Quiet Storm on 93.1FM WZAK – Cleveland’s R&B Leader have in Kym Sellers, a friend and confidant.
For Kym Sellers, the journey began in a small community near Akron, Ohio where her parents raised three children, Kym being the eldest. A fierce competitor who takes no short cuts, Kym’s broadcasting career now spans more than two decades, charting a course for Kym to become a recognized authority on the latest community and entertainment news.
While a college student at the University of Akron, Kym made her radio debut. The former WAUP, 88.1, now Akrons WZIP, became the place where Kym would host a popular radio show. In 1990, after graduating with a B.A. in Mass Media Communications, Kym moved to Seattle, WA and worked for an independent TV station, KTZZ.
As a trailblazer, Kym has created pathways, throughout the United States and beyond. In late 1990, her global journey would take her to Salonica, Greece, where she would explore international cultures.
Kym returned to the U.S. in 1992. Moving to Michigan, she divided her time between radio stations in Detroit (WQBH-1400 AM) Lansing (WQHH-96.5 FM), and Flint (WDZZ-92.7 FM). She also worked at the popular Z-103 in South Carolina. In 1994, Kym returned to Ohio. She would eventually join the top rated, morning drive time show with co-host, Lynn Toliver and Ralph Poole – driving the show and station to number one with the “Three’s Company” a pioneering concept that set a pattern/style for urban radio that would be followed over the next decade.
Additionally, she has worked as a free-lance television reporter, covering news and entertainment for WKYC-TV 3 and WEWS-TV 5. She has also had columns featured in both the Call and Post and Cleveland Life newspapers.
Continuously recognized for her extraordinary achievements and contributions, Kym is recognized as an industry leader, garnering highest honors for her broadcasting talents. According to Upscale Magazine, she was named “One of the Hottest DJ’s in the Country.” She has since won numerous awards for her achievements and has been honored by many organizations, most recently the Heart and Soul Magazine Award for promoting healthier, wealthier and wiser lives. Additionally she received national radio recognition by being nominated for a Marconi Award and was the recipient of The Cleveland Association of Broadcasters 2013 Excellence in Radio Award.
It’s her voice and engaging personality that draws listeners nightly to 93.1fm WZAK where Kym currently hosts the The Quiet Storm, an evening show that airs weeknights from 7-12am, where listeners can hear the latest entertainment news, tips on romance, love and dating. Heard by more than 1.5 million listeners each week throughout northeastern Ohio, the show remains a leader in its time slot. For more than a decade, she’s maintained the number one spot against her competitors.
More than a voice over the airwaves, Kym remains committed to and deeply rooted in the community. She does more than 50 speaking engagements a year, mentors dozens of young aspiring broadcasters and maintains membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. It was in April 2000 that Kym would launch The Kym Sellers Foundation, where she raises nearly $200,000 annually to assist multiple sclerosis patients. Dedicated to finding a cure for MS, the Foundation provides funding for research, education and awareness programs.
While an advocate for the community, for Kym Sellers service begins at home. Her chief accomplishment is undoubtedly the raising of four beautiful daughters, all under 17 years of age, who are poised to follow in mom’s footsteps, as leaders, pioneers, and servants to the community.
