Once a decade snow and ice storms spread thousands of miles across the South, wreaking havoc on commuters and children in several major cities.

Georgia State Highway Patrol troopers are responding to more than 900 crashes. Those drivers in Atlanta’s massive traffic jam that didn’t abandon their vehicles to walk home through the cold slept in their cars.

Cell phones dead, a few families are still waiting to hear from their loved ones.

With parents unable to reach them, many elementary school children were kept overnight in their classrooms.

Some were stuck in their school busses overnight.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports a baby was born on I-285 during the traffic jam.

Almost 28,000 people have joined a Facebook group called SnowedOutAtlanta to help get vital information and emergency phone numbers to stranded people. The group grew so large, it splintered into six separate groups for specific parts of Atlanta.

It’s gotten so bad Georgia Governor Nathan Deal has activated the National Guard to rescue drivers.

But many blame Gov. Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed for the mess in the first place.
