The jury who convicted Kenan Ivery of murdering Akron Police Officer Justin Winebrenner has decided his fate.

The jury has recommended life in prison for 36-year-old Ivery without possibility of parole.

The jury was sequestered since about 3:30 p.m. Friday. The decision was read around 9 p.m.

Judge Alison McCarty will officially sentence Ivery on Nov. 3.

“I know how difficult this case has been for you. And so, my words can’t adequately express how grateful that we all are for you taking on this burden that was basically thrust upon you. And I’m sure that when you received your jury assignments several weeks ago, you never dreamed that you would be put in the center of a case of such gravity and importance. So I want to thank you on behalf of the parties and the citizens of Summit County,” said the judge, choking up at times.

Many Akron police officers filed into the courtroom to show their support.
