Meet Toni Newborn a Cleveland Emergency Medical Services Paramedic at Medic 42 and also a 911 /EMD Dispatcher at the Third District. Toni has been performing both duties for the past 24 years! Toni reports that the most satisfying experience that comes with her job is helping all different kinds of people, no matter what social status or background that they come from. It doesn’t matter what precipitated the call to 9-1-1, she just wants to give them a sense of comfort if possible. One of Toni’s most memorable experiences was convincing a young man not to take his life during a 9-11 call. He decided that he was worth something and thanked me for listening to his poetry and encouraging him to live on. He was truly a great poet! I could go on and one about what this career has brought me but I think just talking, praying and singing with people in the back of the squad to help them get thru their sadness and giving them hope as we travel to the ER has been very rewarding. My favorite past time is that I love to exercise, dance, sing, go to church, and talk to people to try to brighten their day and of course, sharing time with the family! Thanks Toni for you warm helping hand and smile for those in our community.
Representing Fire this month we have Greg Glauner, Acting Assistant Chief who works at Fire Station One. Greg is in his 35th year of service to the Division of Fire and feels he kinda took over “The Family business”. His father was an Assistant Chief on the Cleveland Fire Department and he has followed in his footsteps. Two years ago, Greg’s son became a Firefighter for the City of Columbus. He also has brother-in-law, and a nephew who are professional firefighters. Greg likes the variety of work performed. Every day brings something new. He enjoys meeting the public and truly helping people by managing a bad situation and making it better. And he values the camaraderie the firefighters share. The work schedule with 24 hours on duty and 48 hrs. off-duty in Greg Glauner continued: between shifts is greatly appreciated! Greg is super active in his spare time, and has travelled the world extensively, he’s even run with the bulls in Spain! For the past 24 years Greg has booked a Caribbean Cruise with a group of approximately 1,000 Clevelanders! A family man, Greg enjoys the outdoors – camping, bicycling and watersports. As a family they regularly cycle on the rails-to-trails paths.
