Following the tragic death of Stephon Clark—a 22-year-old unarmed Black man from Sacramento who was fatally shot by police officers—NBA star DeMarcus Cousins has offered to help Clark’s family during this time of grief.  According to Yahoo Sports, Cousins offered to cover Clark’s funeral costs.

After Clark’s death, his family launched a GoFundMe page to raise money for his funeral expenses, the news outlet writes. They ended up surpassing their goal of $50,000 and have received $70,000 from over 2,000 donors.

This isn’t the first time that Cousins has stepped up to cover funeral costs for Black men who have lost their lives in shooting incidents. In 2015, he paid for the funeral of 16-year-old football standout Jaulon “JJ” Clavo who was fatally shot while out with a group of friends.

Stephon Clark, a father of two, was shot at over 20 times by police officers—in his own backyard. The cops who killed him say that they mistook his cell phone for a firearm and “feared” for their lives. After Clark was killed, protests erupted in the city which led to the delay of a Sacramento Kings game.

Although Cousins’ donation is a positive gesture in the midst of tragedy, Clark’s loved ones are still having a hard time coming to terms with his death. “He’s not coming home to me no more. He’s really gone,” his girlfriend Salena Manni told ABC10. “I have to wake up every morning to my kids asking me, ‘Where’s Daddy? Let’s go get Daddy.’ I know for a fact he was so scared, scared for his life. He had too much to lose… he would never want to leave his kids.”
