Has your mail ever been stolen? Did you report it or even know how to?
Mail theft in Ohio is a serious concern for many residents, especially those who are ready to hit the road for summer vacation.
Last year, the United States Postal Service delivered over 154 billion pieces of mail to 155 million addresses.
Cleveland 19 News inspected public records from the United States Postal Inspection Service and found that last year alone, more than 2,000 mail theft losses were reported in Ohio. So far in 2018, Ohio reported 728 cases through mid-May.
David Van Allen at the Downtown Cleveland Post Office says they take steps to ensure safety, like offering a mail on hold service and informed delivery for when you’re out of town. Both are free at usps.com
“You can get a daily update of what’s coming to your mail so that you know what’s coming every day and you know that if there’s a package coming that you want to get maybe you can have a neighbor pick it up for you,” says Van Allen.
The U.S.P.S. says they take steps to ensure mail safety, but with deliveries to over 100 million addresses, they can’t do it alone. The U.S.P.S. recommends that if you see a mail thief at work, or if you believe your mail was stolen, you should immediately call police. You can then call U.S. Postal Inspectors at 877-876-2455 (press 3).
