Every Mother’s Day, we pay tribute to the one woman who was responsible for giving us life. And when it comes to receiving gifts for her special day, mom is probably the first to admit that it is the thought that counts that makes gifts special.  This year, put some extra care and love into your gift by giving her what she wants most…time and memories with you.

1. A Day of Spring Planting: Nothing says spring and summer more than a day in the garden. Bring some cheer to mom’s yard with a day of planting.  Choose plants that flower to add some color to the garden.  Home Depot and local nurseries sell all types for reasonable prices.  For instance, a packet of 30 seeds of Impatiens can cost as little as $4.95.  You can also purchase seeds at Burpee or Spring Hill Nursery.  Bring the flowers to mom and offer to plant them for her, or even better, with her.

2. Homemade Brunch for Two: Let dad handle dinner and make brunch a special gift for just the two of you (or if you have siblings, get them all involved too!).  A nice brunch can be as simple as homemade waffles or pancakes or as elegant as Eggs Benedict.  Here’s a nice menu to consider for under $20: Eggs and Ham, 12 Grain Toast w/ Raspberry Preserves and Mimosas (OJ and Freixenet).

  • 6 Pack Large eggs = $1.19
  • ¼ lb Sliced Deli Ham = $1.50
  • 12 Grain Bread = $1.99
  • Raspberry Preserves = $2.50
  • 64 ounce Orange Juice = $2.79
  • Freixenet = $9.99
  • Total = $19.96

3. Spa at Home: A day at the spa can cost a lot of money, however, pampering mom right at home could be just as relaxing and thoughtful.  Start the day or afternoon by drawing her a bath and then once she is relaxed and distressed, give her a manicure and pedicure.

  • Bath salts (Bath & Body Works – Davies Gate Mini Powder Sugar Bath Soak in Pink Grapefruit $9)
  • 2 votive candles (Yankee Candle – 2 for $1.99 each)
  • Custom-burned CD of relaxing music ($1.99 for writable CD)
  • Nail file (Studio 35 Beauty Printed Salon Board – Walgreens – $0.99)
  • Cuticle pusher (Studio 35 Beauty Cuticle Pusher  – Walgreens – $2.99)
  • Favorite color nail polish (Wet & Wild – $0.99)
  • Total = $19.94.

4.     Hike and a Picnic: If your mom is especially active, create a day of hiking, talking and enjoying the outdoors together. Make sure to bring your camera so that you can get some quality pictures of the two of you and of your beautiful day. Pack a picnic lunch so you can take a break and enjoy prime vistas.  Park passes for the day can cost as little as $5.  Either create your own picnic lunch or stop at a local deli to pick up some snacks, drinks and sandwiches.

5.     Photo and Picture Frame: Find a picture of you and your mom at a family gathering or from a special occasion and have it framed. If the picture is of high quality, get a print that is a 5×7 or even an 8×10. Load your photo onto the Kodak Gallery and purchase your photo and frame all at once to make it especially easy.  Frames start as low as $12 and prints can cost as low as 89 cents.  Another option is to go to your local camera store or drugstore where they do photo printing services and purchase your print and frame there.

6.     A month’s subscription to Ancestry.com: Share memories and stories, and learn more about your family’s roots and heritage by starting a family tree with your mom.  Ancestry.com is a fantastic way to get started.  They have tons of resources that make tracking your genealogy easy and fun.  Also, you can start with a 14-day Free Trial and then purchase a month’s subscription for as little as $19.95.  If you purchase an annual membership, it costs $12.95 per month.

What are you planning on giving your mom this year?  Do any of these ideas seem especially perfect for your mom?
