Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was fined $100,000 for his comments on LeBron James to CNNMoney.com, and Phoenix GM Steve Kerr will take a $10,000 hit for talking about James coming to the Suns for the midlevel exception.

Teams are not allowed to talk about another team’s players until July 1, when free agency opens. Commissioner David Stern said recently that his clubs had done well following the rules, even as fans and the media continue to speculate about what James and fellow free agents in this summer’s class might do.

While Cuban essentially said he wished James would agree to a sign-and-trade deal with the Mavericks, who do not have the cap space to sign an elite free agent, Kerr’s comments were obviously tongue-in-cheek. The midlevel exception is expected to be about $5.6 million next season, or about $10 million less than James made this season.
