CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

Cleveland Metroparks added a new park to their more than 23,000 acres.

The Metroparks took over Dunham Park in Maple Heights on Friday.

Lack of funding and downsizing in the department left Dunham Park in disrepair, making it a place for vandalism and unwanted loitering.

This began driving people away.

However, residents like Marilyn Phillips, who’s lived in Maple Heights for 78 years, remember the days when the park boasted a skating rink and a swimming pool where her son learned to swim.

“It was fantastic. They skated here. That was the good things as they were growing up and that’s gone” said Marilyn.

Without the funding or manpower to fix the peeling paint rundown swing set and dilapidated old pavilion, it was an easy decision for Mayor Annette Blackwell when she was approached by Cleveland Metroparks about acquiring the park.
