Funnyman Mike Epps is already having a good year. He’s fresh off winning his first NAACP Image Award – for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture – for his role in the film “Jumping The Broom.” He’s wrapped “Sparkle,” the remake of the ’70s cult classic starring Jordin Sparks, Tika Sumpter, Derek Luke and the late Whitney Houston, and he’s heading to a standup stage near you this spring and summer.

Epps, an Indianapolis, Indiana native, has been cracking jokes since his teenage years, finally getting his big break on Def Comedy Jam in 1995. Since then, he’s starred in several movies, been a standup regular, had his own stand-up shows and made himself one of Hollywood’s most popular comedians.

His next film, “Sparkle,” due out in August, was already one of this year’s most anticipated black movies, but now, after Houston’s untimely passing, the film’s release is expected to be bittersweet. Epps, too, was impacted by the loss. He remembered Houston as accessible and funny on the set.

Mike Epps Stops in Cleveland, Ohio at the State Theatre March 23rd, 2012.
