ESPN reported on Tuesday at the Cavaliers and L. A. Lakers are in talks for a trade that would send disgruntled center Andrew Bynum back to the Lakers in exchange for forward Pau Gasol.

Although no deal is believed to be imminent, the two sides would likely want to complete something before the Jan. 7 deadline when the second half of Bynum’s $12.25 million salary kicks in as guaranteed.

The move could help the Lakers save more than $20 million in salary and luxury taxes, if they waived Bynum upon receiving him. The Cavaliers would have to include something other than Bynum to make the trade work under league rules.
