Daily SMH: Lil Kim’s Nicki Minaj Diss Is a Desperate Cry for Attention

by Andreas Hale Posted Nov 29th 2010 3:24PM

It had to happen sooner or later right? Lil Kim released her diss record directed at Nicki Minaj over the Thanksgiving weekend titled “Black Friday.” Is the diss warranted or a cry for attention?

wasn’t really a matter of “if” as much as “when.” Kimberly Jones has been firing shots in the direction of Nicki Minaj for quite some time. Back in June, Kim ignited the rivalry by blasting Nicki during a show in NYC. From that point, if you heard Kim, you heard her diss Nicki for being a Lil Kim clone. Nicki responded (sort of) by indirectly lighting up Kim on the song “Roman’s Revenge” off of her Pink Friday album.

The beef got so bad that it made one girl cry.

So now, just as Nicki Minaj releases her highly anticipated Pink Friday album, Lil Kim releases her first actual diss song towards Nicki, the cleverly-titled ‘Black Friday.’ Aside from the fact that the song dropped on Thursday (but hey, Nicki Minaj released ‘Pink Friday’ on a Tuesday so who are we to argue), one has to wonder if Kim’s beef with the Barbie is credible or a desperate cry for attention.

Over Pharoahe Monch’s ‘Simon Says,’ Kim lays into Nicki with the force of a wrecking ball.

“It’ll be a murder scene/ I’m turning Pink Friday to Friday the 13th,” Kim says on the opening bars of the song. “Alright you Lil Kim clone clown/ All this buffoonery, this sh-t stops now!”

At first we figured that Kim was in need of something to breathe life back into her stagnant career. But after listening to ‘Black Friday,’ it’s apparent that Kim is a bit perturbed by the Nicki’s presence in the rap game.

“This hood sh-t you and Drake ain’t built for/ this the sh-t the other b-tch almost got killed for,” Kim spits.

It’s obvious that Kim is not playing one bit. And truthfully, Kim really gives it to Nicki on ‘Black Friday.’ And if you just happen to be associated with Nicki in some way, shape or fashion, you’re going to get it too. Drake, Lil Wayne and even Diddy (“You and Diddy, sorry bunch of swagger jackers/ I mothered you hoes, I should claim you on my income taxes”) all get stung by the Queen Bee.

So why does this get a SMH? Because apparently there’s only room for one top female in hip-hop. At least, that’s the way it’s been for the most part. Whenever there’s a woman on top, another one tries to take her down. Why can’t there be enough room at the top for multiple female rappers to succeed?

They need to settle down and figure this out.
