If there has ever been a more amazing comeback in modern R&B history than that of El DeBarge, we don’t know what it is.
DeBarge, the 49-year-old singer, was the linchpin of his family group, DeBarge, crooning instant classics like “I Like It,” “All This Love,” and “Time Will Reveal” in the 1980s. While drug abuse ran rampant among his siblings, El was able to withstand temptation, but when a solo career didn’t pan out, he fell prey to the family curse.
Now back on the music scene after over a decade of dormancy that included a prison stint, DeBarge’s recent performances have proven that he’s still a musical force. His new CD “Second Chance” is out now.

BORN: Eldra Patrick DeBarge in Detroit, Michigan.
BIG BREAK: Being born the sixth child in the musical DeBarge family of 10 siblings. El was considered a gifted musician even as a child. He was in the church choir and studied music with a private teacher, becoming well-known for his vocal and piano skills.
RESUME: El first came to the forefront as the lead singer of DeBarge, but struck out on his own in 1986. He made four solo albums and hit with “Who’s Johnny” from the “Short Circuit” soundtrack, but neither he nor his family’s group ever achieved as much success apart as they did together.
BACK STORY: El was one member of the family who hadn’t had problems with drug addiction, but in the beginning of this decade, he began surfacing in news reports after arrests for drug possession. After violating the terms of probation from an earlier drug possession charge in 2008, El spent almost two years in a California prison.
FUN FACT: El’s 1989 Motown solo CD, “Gemini,” has become a coveted but expensive collector’s item since it’s currently out of print.
