Survey: More than 80% Say NAACP (Image Awards) is Hypocritical

The NAACP has been under some questioning eyes lately, especially for the organization’s honorees. In a recent survey taken at YourBlackWorld.com, 83 percent of Black participants said the civil rights org is definitely not upholding a positive reputation by nominating artists like Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj for their derogatory lyrics.

The following question was asked: “The NAACP Image Awards recently nominated artists like Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj, both of whom have used the N-word and lyrics which degrade women. Does this make the NAACP hypocritical?”

Eighty-three percent answered, “Yes, these nominations are a contradiction to the message and image of the NAACP.”

Another 5.8 percent answered maybe and 10 percent answered no. Of course there was some variation depending on age, but the survey definitely shed some light on the public’s opinion of the organization, especially in light of radio host Tom Joyner’s defense of the Image Awards nominee choices.

“This is show business …  and if you want them (the NAACP) to be prime time, and air their awards show on a major network, then you’re going to have to have the rappers,” said Joyner.
