How Raspberries Can Rock Your Love Life

It’s shocking to me that in 4 years of writing about aphrodisiac ingredients I’ve never featured raspberries. I will admit that, from a folkloric perspective, raspberries have a less interesting history than, say, apples, figs or pomegranate. But just look at that fruit! It should be clear, from just a glance, that raspberries are sexy.

Red raspberries in particular, are evocative in their appearance. The perfect, lipstick shade of red, the berries are enticingly shaped like a dome of pearly, crimson caviar beads. These beads, or druplets as they’re technically and less romantically called, pop one by one in the mouth to add to the sensuality of the fruit.

Raspberry’s aroma, similar to the petals of a freshly cut, home grown rose, is often used in lightly seductive colognes, candles and sachets, leading researchers to believe that the fruit’s scent alone can be used as a tool in seduction.

And although evidence of their use historically as an aphrodisiac is a bit lean, from a nutritional standpoint, raspberries are clearly valuable tools in the seductor’s arsenal. They are a good source of manganese, Vitamins B2 and C and provide potassium and magnesium, all tremendously important in keeping libido revved. (Their vitamin content is so high that raspberries boast 50% more antioxidants than strawberries.) With their bundle of hard, little seeds, they are also a source of fiber, very important in keeping you feeling sexy, if you know what I mean!

Part of raspberries’ allure may also be their fragility and fleeting availability. A luxury good as far as fruits go, the raspberry’s growing season is tragically short. The fruit is fragile and, once picked, will spoil in a matter of days. To scoop up a spoonful of perfect raspberries in cream at the height of the season is an incredible indulgence……one that for many of us, me included, is the kind of breakfast/dessert/snack to seal the deal!
