UPDATE: An autopsy performed Friday reported that Hardt died of peritonitis, a severe abdominal inflammation initiated by a bacterial infection in her colon, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. According to the medical examiner’s office, infections from the injections in her face did not cause her death, which was ruled to be natural.

A south suburban Chicago woman died Thursday after injecting hot beef fat into her face around her mouth and chin, a procedure she had apparently self-administered multiple times before.

Janet Hardt, 63, of the 1000 block of West 186th Street in Homewood, Ill., reportedly went to Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest Thursday with complaints that her face felt like it was burning and had become singed, CBS Chicago reports. She was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m.

ABC 7 reports that an autopsy of Hardt’s body is scheduled for later Friday in order to officially determine the cause and manner of her death. The woman reportedly had a history of multiple facial surgeries.
