Police, Secret Service agents and special security blocked off streets in Washington, D.C. and redirected traffic Saturday night as a fire-engine red carpet was run down 13th Street. Cameras flashed as guests and honorees arrived at this historic Warner Theater to tape the fifth annual BET Honors celebration on January 14.

As always the red carpet was dripping with star power. Celebrities and public figures photographed on the carpet included Judge Hatchett, who wore a long, backless gown to camouflage the cast on her ankle. Two thirds of Destiny’s Child, singers Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, sauntered down the red carpet separately but still very close in succession.

The actors and musicians continued to pour in, two of the biggest “ah moments” on the carpet was seeing actor Terrance Howard with his daughter as his date and the baby of the Smith family, Willow Smith, who looked very shy in her long yellow dress and short haircut. Although, her father Will Smith was close by, he opted to skip the red carpet.

Also, CNN’s star reporters Wolf Blitzer and TJ Holmes with his new wife, attorney Marilee Fiebig and two huge political leaders Collin Powell and Congressman Jesse Jackson made their way down the carpet shortly thereafter.

Being in D.C., it was no surprise that the news of political power would continue to roll in throughout the night. It was announced just days ago that the nation’s First Lady Michelle Obama would take the stage to be a part of the tribute to the prolific poet, author and humanitarian, Maya Angelou.

We also got wind of Kelly Rowland joining the stage with Raekwon of The WuTang Clan for Mariah Carey’s tribute. We’re excited to see how Kelly vocally matches Mariah.

It seemed that Mariah Carey and hubby Nick Cannon were running a tad behind schedule as the couple had to skip the red carpet. The new parents made it to the Warner Theater just in the nick of time, being seated just moments before the ceremony began.

Other notable red carpet appearances include, Stevie Wonder, Anthony Hamilton and Jill Scott who wore a beautiful fur coat and vibrant blue nail polish. Aretha Franklin and her fiancé slipped past most of the media, flying past reporters but not quite escaping the notice of photographers.
