On the eve of his hotly anticipated comeback album, news has emerged that Bobby Womack has been diagnosed with colon cancer. The 68-year-old soul singer is also being treated for pneumonia, according to the bassist Bootsy Collins, but remains “very upbeat about his future”.

Collins revealed his friend’s illness on his own Facebook page, asking fans to send Womack “prayers and love vibes”. “He is Fighting Pneumonia in the Hospital Now,” Collins wrote on Saturday. “Will Update After I talk to Him.”

On Sunday, the news was not good. “I JUST SPOKE TO OUR FRIEND BOBBY WOMACK,” Collins wrote. “He Wanted You All to Know That He Loves You & Thxs for the Prayers. Docs Says He Is In 1st Stage of Colon Cancer, He is Very Up Beat About His Future, we laughed & joked before we hung up.”

Earlier this month, Womack was rushed to a hospital in Houston, Texas, suffering from “severe shortness of breath”. Womack’s representative explained that the singer would undergo a “minor heart procedure”, postponing a scheduled gig until 2 June. “We anticipate a full and speedy recovery,” the representative said at the time. “Thank you for your understanding, patience and prayers.”

Womack just finished his first album in 13 years, The Bravest Man in the Universe. Its set to drop in June. The first single, Please Forgive My Heart, is streaming now, and other songs will feature Fatoumata Diawara and Lana Del Rey. Womack, who is diabetic, underwent surgery for prostate cancer last year.
