Janet Jackson, who is mostly known for her work in front of the camera, is stepping behind the camera in support for the transgendered community.

Janet has signed on to executive produce a documentary called Truth, focusing on the lives and struggles of transgendered people around the world, according to the Associated Press.

Janet said the film, which is set to begin production this summer, is an opportunity to ask people to try to understand a different way of life.

“All people are very important to me. I’ve been fortunate to make friends and learn about very different lives. Truth is our small chance to ask that you try and understand someone who lives their life in a way that is a little bit different from yours, even though all of our hearts are the same. We want to stop the hate and find understanding,” Janet said in a statement.

The “Control” singer is also expected to step in front of the camera to conduct interviews with the subjects.

Robert Jason, who has previously directed a documentary about the lives of four transgendered New Yorkers on The Style Network, has signed on for Truth. He plans for Janet to be a prominent part of the film.

“Janet Jackson will take us on a visually innovative, cerebral journey through the turbulent lives of transgendered people of all ages around the world and their epic struggle for equality,” said Robert who expects the film to have a lasting impact on society.

“Just as it is hard to believe that there ever was a time when different components of society were required to use separate drinking fountains, it is as incredible that one’s gender expression remains just such a target for discrimination,” he said in a statement.

Janet got her first executive producer credit with her video, Janet Jackson: The Rhythm Nation Compilation in 1990, and it is her only executive producer credit to date. The Why Did I Get Married star also entered an agreement with Lionsgate last year to select, develop and produce a theatrical motion picture in cooperation with the company.
