Sherman Hemsley didn’t die of natural causes as first reported. The star of “The Jeffersons” TV classic, died as a result of a cancerous mass on his lung, TMZ says in an exclusive story on its website, citing a postmortem report by the El Paso County Texas Medical Examiner.

TMZ says the report it obtained lists the primary cause of death as “superior vena cava syndrome” caused by the mass in the actor’s lung.

According to the report, Sherman had been advised to get chemo and radiation therapy before he succumbed to his illness. It’s unclear if Sherman was a smoker.

Hemsley died at his El Paso home last month at 74. Irene Santiago with the El Paso Coroner’s Office initially said there would be no autopsy because Hemsley died of natural causes.

Hemsley first played George Jefferson in the CBS sitcom “All in the Family” and starred in “The Jeffersons” spinoff from 1975 to 1985.
