Robin Roberts was surrounded by friends and family before she received her bone marrow transplant on Thursday.
Diane Sawyer shared an update about her colleague on “ABC World News.” “This morning, [Robin] received her bone marrow transplant and as some friends gathered, she said to us once again that she knows all of you at home are watching and with her, and that fills her with strength and joy,” Sawyer said.
Sawyer, Sam Champion and Roberts’ sisters Sally Ann and Dorothy were among those with the “Good Morning America” co-host that morning. Sawyer shared some footage from the hospital room on Thursday. Before the procedure, Sally Ann (who was also Robert’s donor) serenaded her sister with “Fifteen Years on the Erie Canal,” and Robin’s pastor led everyone in prayer.
Roberts underwent intense chemotherapy for eight days in preparation for the transplant. On the morning of the procedure, she shared a powerful message with fans from her bed. “Thoughts are so powerful,” she said. You’ve got to change the way you think in order to change the way you feel … I feel the love and I thank you for it. Thank you.”
Sawyer told ABC News’ Dr. Richard Besser Thursday, “We’ve being saying to each other, she is amazing.”
