Melissa Harris-Perry tweeted a photo of what used to be her New Orleans home.

Harris-Perry purchased the fixer-upper earlier this year. The property was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina, and became a site of crime in the neighborhood. Harris-Perry and her husband, who have flipped homes in the past, purchased the property to fix it up, hoping its renovation would contribute to the safety of the neighborhood.

When she purchased the house, it lacked a back wall and was in need of serious repair. But as Hurricane Isaac pummeled its way across the Gulf Coast over the summer, Harris-Perry’s home was further destroyed. The strong winds ripped the back side of the home apart, leaving it destructed.

After Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc across the East Coast, Harris-Perry tweeted that she felt solidarity with those who were impacted by the storm’s wrath. Attempts to salvage her New Orleans home failed, leaving a pile of wood on the plot of land where the home previously stood.

“Attempt 2 save what was left of our Isaac damaged home failed. Lost rest today,” she wrote. “Feel solidarity w/ #Sandy suffering.”
