CLEVELAND, OH –
19 Action News has learned of a new push to restrict where Cleveland city workers live.
This is new fallout from a story we broke more than a year ago — three firefighters were living out of state, including one in California.
The new law would require many kinds of city workers to live in the counties of Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, Summit, Medina, Lorain or Portage.
Councilman Kevin Conwell is pushing the new law and he expects the first hearing next week.
“If there’s a man-made bomb or man-made threat or natural disaster, we need to get to our safety forces right away,” said Councilman Kevin Conwell.
The proposed law covers, police officers, firefighters, paramedics, street crews, power crews, all top city bosses and more. It had been discussed briefly months ago, and it was just expanded.
Firefighters Union President Frank Szabo doesn’t think this is necessary.
“Every time we’ve had an emergency recall of Cleveland firefighters, we’ve had more than adequate personal,” said Firefighters Union President Frank Szabo.
