This past weekend Philadelphia native Will Smith was at the Temple’s Center For Performing Arts to support his long time friend Sista Souljah on the release of her new book “A Deeper Love Inside: The Porsche Santiaga Story, ” a sequel to her extremely popular novel “The Coldest Winter Ever.” The two staples in the African American community sat down for conversation entitled “Real Talk” with Sista Souljah where they discussed various topics from community to love, covering a large arena of ideas and perspectives.

During the discussion, Will shared a personal story from his childhood that set the foundation for his strong work ethics as well as his perspective on overcoming large obstacles in life.   As a child, Will and his brother learned from their father  Will Smith, Sr. to be hard workers.  Will Smith, Sr. tore down a brick wall in front of  his business establishment and required the youngsters to rebuild that wall which according to Will was an impossible task yet they worked at it all summer.  This project gave the youngsters something to occupy their minds with  and provided a long-term goal for the youths, which according to Will, could have been achieved by the brothers just placing one brick on the wall per day.  This challenge provided the actor with one of life’s keys which is to remain positive despite any large obstacles.  ”The Fresh Prince” put major emphasis on having the right mindset to push through challenges.  In life sometimes the biggest obstacle is remaining positive despite our day to day adversities.  Do you have a personal goal that you’d like to achieve?  Learn from “The Fresh Prince.”  Take it brick by brick, one day at a time and never lose hope.  Before long your dreams will be reality.
