CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

Tuesday evening east side Cleveland council members held a very well attended community meeting on what to do to make the community safer.

This comes on the heels of two women found within about a mile of each other, both had been murdered.

“Everybody needs to be involved,” encouraged Councilman Zack Reed. “You can’t say to ourselves — well I’m not going to do because they’re going to do it. I’m not going to do it because it’s their responsibility. We’re here tonight to say its all of our responsibility.”

With that in mind 19 Action News went to see how the city is holding up its end of the bargain. We stopped on East 93rd and Booth. We found busted street lights and so much garbage it’s spilling into the street.

We talked to Latisha Coleman who’s lived on Booth for 10 years. On her street there were tires, mattresses and garbage all over.

“And then it brings riff-raff down here and when crime is committed you don’t know who to point the finger at, because people just come and dump stuff down here,” said Coleman.

At the community meeting Councilmen Reed made sure people knew about neighborhood watch training, garbage ordinances and clean-up programs. But reminded people the city can’t help if people don’t get involved.
