Jury Has to Decide Whether the Convicted Murderer Should Get Life in Prison or Death
Jodi Arias is back in court today after a lengthy time away behind bars. The judge in the case will allegedly announce the date of Arias’ new sentencing trial, which could lead to her receiving the death penalty or life behind bars with or without parole.
Arias was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Travis Alexander in May; that conviction cannot be overturned by a new jury. The new jury will only be able to sentence Arias to either the death penalty or life in prison with or without parole. Prosecutors want Arias put away for good, but her lawyers are hoping to work out a deal that will keep Arias out of jail for life and avoid the death penalty.
Lawyers Kirk Nurmi and Jennifer Willmott have reportedly filed numerous motions in order to prevent Arias from seeing the inside of a courtroom until next year. Prosecutors, however, want her to be sentenced as quickly as possible, putting this entire ordeal behind them and Alexander’s family.
Nurmi and Willmott have also asked the court not to televise the new sentencing trial and to provide a list of jurors’ Twitter and social media accounts, which they see as “crucial tools with which Ms. Arias can work to ensure that her jury are either not communicating about the case via Twitter or considering information that was sent to them via Twitter as opposed to what is presented to them in court,” according to court documents.
