As of 12:01 a.m. Oct. 21, gay marriage became legal in New Jersey and that state’s senator-elect, Cory Booker, is one of the officials officiating these new nuptials.
Back in September, it was Judge Mary Jacobson of the Mercer County Superior Court who ruled in favor of same-sex couples being allowed to marry starting Monday, Oct 21.
Gov. Chris Christie’s administration put in a request to have the legalization delayed within the state until the official legal appeal was final, but Jacobson denied the request.
According to BuzzFeed, as mayor of Newark, Booker started holding weddings on the first floor rotunda of City Hall right after the clock hits midnight, with about 10 couples who had already signed up to attend the event.
Booker joins like of other well-known figures to conduct same-sex marriages as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg officiated the wedding of Kennedy Center President Michael M. Kaiser and economist John Roberts in August.
