CLEVELAND, Ohio – An awkward exchange marked Thursday’s special caucus to name a new president.
Things got a bit heated between outgoing Cleveland City Council President Martin Sweeney and other council members when Councilman Michael D. Polensek tried to voice his displeasure with the redistricting process.
Sweeney tried to force a roll call vote to elect a new council president but Councilman Jeffrey Johnson objected, trying to raise a point of order.
It remained polite but tense for a few moments.
“Councilman Johnson, please don’t tell me what we will do,” Sweeney said.
“Well, please don’t tell us what we’re going to do,” Johnson answered. “You’re not going to force a roll call. You’re not going to do that.”
Eventually, council settled down and voted Councilman Kevin Kelley in as its new president. Kelley represents Ward 13 and has been council clerk since 2008. His council presidency begins in January 2014 and runs for four years.
