CLEVELAND — The City of Cleveland made a public safety announcement about the rise in Shigellosis cases, especially among children, in the area.

It’s a highly contagious form of diarrhea that may also cause fever and stomach cramps.

Anyone with symptoms should seek medical attention and should not return to school or work until they test negative for the Shigella bacteria.  A doctor should officially give the clearance to return.

The symptoms are known to last from 48 to 72 hours.

Shigellosis is spread by person to person contact.
