*The furor over Comcast’s plan to buy Time Warner Cable could get more interesting as opponents appeal to MSNBC show hosts for support.
The Huffington Post reports that writers and producers with the Writers Guild of America-East at Peacock Productions are petitioning Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O’Donnell, the Rev. Al Sharpton, Ed Schultz and Chris Hayes to speak out against the impending merger.
The request is the latest to occur since workers accused NBC Universal and Comcast, its parent company, of union busting in December. As it stands now, the workers are concerned that the Comcast/Time Warner Cable deal could give way to even more anti-union behavior.
In a tweet posted Thursday, the Writers Guild of America-East acknowledged that its leaders and Peacock producers delivered boxes of petitions to MSNBC hosts at 30 Rock.
This isn’t the first time that the group and the AFL-CIO have urged MSNBC hosts to speak out against NBC Universal’s alleged tactics. The current letter reignites requests from the organizations for MSNBC hosts to support workers’ attempts to unionize. NBC Universal has denied the allegations directed its way by critics.
Although none of the five hosts have addressed the issue on air, Hayes met with a group of workers and Schultz defended himself against backlash over his response to a journalist seeking comment on the story, according to the Post.
