Fans of Arsenio Hall‘s rebooted late night talk show will have to hit their DVRs for old episodes because “The Arsenio Hall Show” was canceled by CBS. This marks the end of Hall’s efforts to regain the popularity his show had when it first ran from 1989 to 1994.
According to reports, CBS planned to renew “The Arsenio Hall Show” for a second season, but CBS stations across the country wanted to downgrade the show which caused the bigwigs at CBS to rethink their position on the late night gabfest. Since the show has been airing reruns all week, the last original segment was on May 21st.
CBS released a statement:
“Unfortunately, ‘The Arsenio Hall Show’ will not return for a second season; while there are many loyal fans of the show, the series did not grow its audience enough to continue. Arsenio is a tremendous talent and we’d like to thank him for all the hard work and energy he put into the show. We’d also like to thank Tribune and all our station group partners for their support of the show.”
Many are shocked at the cancellation because Arsenio’s return to late night was met with massive amounts of fan enthusiasm. However, the show couldn’t hold on to the momentum it created during its opening week and ratings began to decline. Also, there was a struggle to book celebrity guests.
The show’s staffers were surprised at the news when they were told at the set. Arsenio Hall has yet to make a comment about his cancellation.
