CLEVELAND — Public Square is now one step closer to getting a major facelift in time for the Republican National Convention in 2016.

Monday night, City Council approved some funding for the project.

For years, the look of public square has remained the same, but soon, the once hub for commuters could feature an outdoor café, a fountain that transforms into skating rink, and pathways winding through Cleveland monuments.

“It needs to come back to what it used to be when you can have family fun, it needs to happen,” said Clevelander Michael Curran.

The Group Plan Commission went before City Council to present the most recent plans.

“It’s really about quality of life and it’s about making sure downtown is an exciting 24/7 city and for those who use public square, whether it’s a commuter or walker, it’s going to be a better experience,” said Tony Coyne, Chairman of the Group Plan Commission.
