CLEVELAND — Governor John Kasich and challenger Ed FitzGerald have not been in the same room, breathing the same air and talking about issues for the entire campaign…until today.

The Governor has declined to debate FitzGerald, claiming he’s spent plenty of time in public explaining his programs and priorities.

The two met one-on-one for the one and only time Thursday for an editorial board endorsement meeting at the Northeast Ohio Media Group and Plain Dealer Publishing Co.

The format called for them to answer a panel’s questions for an hour and a half.

FitzGerald arrived early, lamenting the lack of debates.

“I think it’s really cowardly and unfortunate. He’ll be the first governor in 36 years who refuses to debate his opponent…I think he’s diminished. I think the process is diminished . I think it’s disrespectful for the voters,” he said.

Governor Kasich is sitting atop a huge campaign fund and and a big lead in the polls.
