CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –  Ohio State and Oregon battled in the first ever College Football Playoff National Championship. Ohio State would come out victorious with a 42-20 win. Ohio State, led by Urban Meyer was looking to win the National Championship for the first time since 2002. Oregon looked to win their first College Football National Championship. The Buckeyes have been to two Championship games since 2002, but fell to LSU and Florida.

The Buckeyes are on a hot streak winning their last 12 games. They’re coming off 3 of their biggest wins of the year by defeating rival Michigan, then defeating Wisconsin in shut-out fashion in the Big Ten Championship, and then defeating Alabama in the first round of the playoffs. The Buckeyes are on their third quarterback of the year. Cardale Jones took over for J.T. Barrett in the second half of the Michigan game. Barrett would suffer a season ending injury, leaving the Buckeyes to turn to the former Glenville Tarblooder in the Big Ten Championship. Jones would not disappoint, he led the Buckeyes to a 59-0 victory over Wisconsin.

The Oregon Ducks are 13-1, their only loss coming from Arizona in October. The Ducks are led by current Heisman Trophy award winner, Marcus Mariota. Oregon’s fast pace offense has led them to a 13-1 record and scoring 42 or more points in every game since their loss to Arizona.  Oregon defeated Florida State, 59-20 in the first round of the playoffs that took place on New Years’ Day. It would be the first time that the Seminoles have lost since 2012.
