In the wake of controversy over the Confederate flag in South Carolina, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan is calling for the removal of the American flag across the nation, saying Blacks have suffered as much under the U.S. symbol of justice as they did under the rebel flag that symbolizes slavery and indoctrinated racism, according to WMAL radio.

Farrakhan was in Washington, D.C., Wednesday to join faith leaders at Metropolitan AME Church in a talk about October’s Millions for Justice Mobilization march in the city when the subject turned to theCharleston church massacre.

“I don’t know what the hell the fight is about over the Confederate flag,” he said speaking in his trademark Baptist minister timbre.

“We need to pull the American flag down because we’ve caught as much hell under that as the Confederate flag,” he said to applause and cheers.

“Who are we fighting today?” he continued. “It’s the people that carry the American flag. What flag do the police have? What flag flies over the non-Justice department? What flag flies over the White House, where a Black man lives and is called nig-a everyday? What about that flag?”

Farrakhan was once a permanent and fearsome fixture on the civil rights scene, but has kept a relatively low profile in recent years amid talk of illness and claims of obsolescence as the Internet gives way to a new breed of modern-day rights activists.

He reemerged with a vengeance Wednesday to speak out against the shocking race-driven murders of nine people at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina by a professed White supremacist a week ago.

Read NewOne’s transcript of the talk (warning: graphic content):

“White folks march with you because they don’t want you upsetting the city. They don’t give a damn about them nine [victims of the Charleston, South Carolina, massacre]. When they arrested that skunk [Dylann Roof], they took him to Burger King.

I’ll be damned. The man just killed nine human beings. And you know what they were saying? You did a good job. You killed all them nig-as. You think they were sympathetic? If they were sympathetic with us, they would have snatched him, put him in chains, and held a gun on him.

I don’t know what the hell the fight is about over the Confederate flag. We need to pull the American flag down because we’ve caught as much hell under that as the Confederate flag. [Applause and cheers.]

Who are we fighting today? It’s the people that carry the American flag. What flag do the police have? What flag flies over the non-Justice department? What flag flies over the White House, where a Black man lives and is called nig-a everyday? What about that flag?

So every time we die, they give us a symbol [of] no substance. We died on Edmund Pettus Bridge under that flag.

We’ve fought in wars under that flag and came back and were hung and murdered and brutalized under that flag. [Rousing applause and cheers.]

So don’t give us no symbol. Well, now we’re going to pull the flag down. That’s as easy as it is pulling your pants down. You gotta answer a call to nature, you pull your pants down. That’s easy.

You pull the flag down and you’re supposed to go away satisfied? See, you don’t know what justice looks like if somebody can pull a flag down and you’re happy as though they did something. We want justice under that flag or what the hell is the use of [pledging] allegiance to a flag under which we get no justice?

Do you agree with Farrakhan? If not, why? If yes, why? Sound off in the comments.
