Straight Outta Compton made history at the box office this weekend. The N.W.A. biopic took in $56.1 million, and had the biggest August opening weekend for an R-rated film since American Pie 2 back in 2001.
On Friday, the movie took in close to $25 million alone, and it was projected that it would bring in close to $57 million at the box office. How’s that for spot on? The film has already surpassed its budget, as it took $29 million to make. It’s poised to be the most profitable movie of the summer season. It’s undeniable that director F. Gary Gray, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube have a hit on their hands.
From Variety:
“The movie tapped into something in our culture and that made it more of a must-see,” said Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst at BoxOffice.com.
Straight Outta Compton, starring newcomers O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins, and Jason Mitchell, beat out reigning box office champ, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Guy Ritchie’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E, and Fantastic Four.
In more Dr. Dre news, his album, Compton: A Soundtrack sold more than 300,000 copies in its first week.
