AKRON, Ohio– Macy’s announced on Wednesday it will be closing 40 stores, including two in Northeast Ohio.

The Macy’s at Chapel Hill Mall in Akron and Midway Mall in Elyria will close early in early spring. The stores employ 91 and 64 associates, respectively. The Akron location has been open since 1967.

“In today’s rapidly evolving retail environment, it is essential that we maintain a portfolio of the right stores in the right places. So we will continue to add stores selectively while also being disciplined about closing stores that are unproductive or no longer robust shopping destinations because of changes in the local retail shopping landscape,” said Terry J. Lundgren, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc, in a news release.
