Social media has really changed the self-confidence game. Or merely aided in the boost of narcissism. Either way, this case of an Ohio fugitive sending a selfie to police because he hated a mugshot they released is making us think it’s a little of both.
The viral act happened last week when the Lima Police Department released a mugshot to find Donald A. “Chip” Pugh, 45, who missed his court date for a DUI arrest, Fox8 Cleveland reports. Pugh has a history of domestic violence, breaking and entering, and disorderly conduct charges. In addition to the DUI, he was wanted on arson and vandalism charges.
Pugh appeared in the wanted mugshot with bloodshot eyes and a grin. Not satisfied with the photo, he posted a different pic on the department’s Facebook page, asking them to use his “cool” selfie instead.
But the Lima Police Department wasn’t laughing.
The selfie joke quickly went left after fans turned Pugh into a Where’s Waldo meme and the fugitive even spoke to a local radio station about it.
Lima Ohio reports:
“Man, they just did me wrong,” Pugh told the radio hosts. “They put a picture that made me look like I was a Thundercat or something.”
He said his original photo was a little too cheerful because he knew he wouldn’t be held on a drinking and driving charge. Once released, he simply decided he didn’t want to make his court appearance.
“When I was a little kid, my grandmother told me a bedtime story,” Pugh said on the radio. “My hero was this character, who used to say, ‘Run, run, fast as you can. You can’t catch me, I’m the gingerbread man.’”
He proceeded to joke about where he was. He said he was in Town Square holding a sign saying “Not Guilty.” He claimed he was at a McDonald’s. He said in a chicken coop, making his own rooster noises.
Police believe the more Pugh engages in the viral fame he’s gained, the easier it will be to track him down. A Facebook page called “Free Chip Pugh” currently boasts over 400 supporters.
