*The first-ever All Def Movie Awards, created by Russell Simmons in the wake of #OscarsSoWhite, handed out its honors Wednesday night in a ceremony hosted by Tony Rock (the brother of Oscar host Chris Rock), and scheduled to air Sunday, Feb. 28 on Fusion (opposite the Oscar telecast on ABC.)
“Straight Outta Compton” won the top award for best picture, beating nominees “Beasts of No Nation,” “Chi-raq,” “Concussion” “Creed” and “Dope.”
“Creed” earned a best actor award for Michael B Jordan, and best director for Ryan Coogler. Sanaa Lathan picked up best actress for “The Perfect Guy.” Will Smith received the Lifetime Achievement Award and Norman Lear the Vanguard Award.
