ASHTABULA COUNTY, OH (WOIO) –
A shooting happened in Ashtabula County Tuesday morning. Cleveland 19 has confirmed that a sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a male.
The shooting happened in the 1300 block of Dodgeville Road just west of Miller Road in Rome Township.
BCI Agent Jim Ciotti says a deputy was following up on a robbery investigation from Monday night. They pulled over a black SUV at the owner of the SUV’s home located at 1334 Dodgeville Road around 7a Tuesday morning, but the driver of the vehicle took off driving through the backyards of three homes before crashing the SUV into a pole near a church parking lot entrance. It is unknown at what point the male suspect was shot by Ashtabula County Sheriff Deputies.
A gun was found on the front seat of the SUV. BCI agents were seen behind a home at 1334 Dodgeville, where the owner of the SUV lived placing evidence markers by a doghouse. There were also visible tire tracks in the backyard where the SUV had driven through.
The owner of the black SUV is Jenn Rufo-Soderstrom of 1334 Dodgeville. Jen spoke with Cleveland 19 News saying she let the suspect, with whom she has known for 5 years, borrow her car two days ago and hadn’t seen it since. According to Soderstrom, she believes the suspect’s girlfriend was also in the vehicle and climbed out of the passenger seat when it hit the pole. Soderstrom believed the woman was handcuffed and detained. The Ashtabula County Sheriff Department says they have made no official arrests. Soderstrom described the suspect shot by officials as a white male in his mid to late 30s.
A neighbor who lives right next to the church where the SUV crashed was home this morning when the incident took place. She reported to Cleveland 19 that the suspect reportedly dragged an officer through the backyards of several homes before the officer let go. The neighbor says that the house where the incident started is a known drug house in the area.
