CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –
Cleveland has been ranked the second most stressful city to raise a family in in a recent study released by WalletHub.
The study looked at divorce rates, percentage of single parents and the general well-being index to determine the stress level of families in each city.
Cleveland, which has the number one highest divorce rate in the country and the second highest poverty rate, according to The Stir, fell just below Detroit in the final rankings.
Cleveland 19 News headed to Edgewater Park on Labor Day to see if families agreed with the study. People we spoke with can’t seem to pinpoint why it would be more stressful to raise a family here in Cleveland — they say everyone’s circumstances are different.
We found Sarah Edmonds getting some much-needed relaxation at the park.
“Between sports and school and jobs it can be very stressful sometimes,” she said.
Her son Jackson is nine months old, and she and her fiancé are raising three other children as well.
“I work overtime, my fiancé has two jobs — so it can be a lot. We’re still paycheck-to-paycheck making house payments, school supplies and clothes, holidays and birthdays, it adds up,” Edmonds said.
She’s not alone. It turns out a lot of other families in the Cleveland area are feeling the stress.
“I think it’s changing, with the positivity that’s going on in the city, just different places to go and feel safe and hang out,” said Damien Ware, a parent.
Ware is a combat veteran who has lived overseas. He moved back to Cleveland to raise his kids here.
“Economically, I start a new job tomorrow. So everything’s all good. If you had asked me a week ago, it would’ve been different,” Ware said.
