WILLOUGHBY, Ohio–  One person is dead after a police-involved shooting in Willoughby Wednesday afternoon.

Police Chief Jack Beckwith said in a press conference that officers were called out to the parking lot of a Lowe’s Home Improvement store around 1 p.m. because someone had spotted a man who had numerous felony warrants out on him in a car there.

The first officer to arrive parked his vehicle in front of the suspect’s vehicle. He asked the suspect for id, but was given false information, which he discovered when he called the information in.

A second officer arrived and positioned his vehicle behind the car.

It was at this point that the car sped off, slamming into the police motorcycle and an officer as it left the parking lot. Shots were fired. The car eventually crashed into a parking lot across the street.

The suspect was killed in the shooting. The officer was taken to a hospital and Chief Beckwith reported that he had what seemed to be minor injuries.
