The Springbook High School are not performing anytime soon despite the repeated apologies from the principal, who has refused to give on-camera interviews.
SILVER SPRING, MD (WJLA/CNN) – “Too ghetto” – words that packed a punch when used to describe the Springbrook High School cheerleaders.
“If parents out there that are watching, if this happened to their kids, they would feel the same anger and disrespect,” said cheerleader Deyana Page on Thursday.
A performance last week against their rival, Paint Branch, caused a stir. According to the student newspaper, the Springbrook’s principal, Dr. Art Williams, told the squad’s coach their dancing was a “little too ghetto” and to “tone it down.”
The cheerleaders haven’t performed since in protest.
“Nothing was changed. We’ve cheered the same way for the last four years, so we were kind of confused,” said cheerleader captain Semira Bullock.
Williams, who has been principal since August, tweeted an apology, saying he was quoting Paint Branch’s principal. He apologized again during a private meeting Wednesday with the cheerleaders.
He gave another apology over the intercom during class Thursday.
